Yngi Karl Sigurjónsson

My goal in this project was to activate the area behind Stjórnarráðið, and to increase flow of people through that area. I made a building facing Lækjargata and closed the gap between Hverfisgata and Laugavegur. I designed a hotel with a courtyard in front and a swimming pool on top. The hotel is open to the public even when it is vacant and that strengthens the flow of people through the area. The courtyard connects with Lækjargata, Hverfisgata, Laugavegur and Skólastræti. I want to make the area like a landscape and therefore the hotel shapes like a mountain climbing up the existing houses. I wanted to bring back the spring that lies underneath Lækjargata and make a small pond on the corner of Hverfisgata and Lækjargata. Wooden plates on different levels lead up the courtyard and the plates create a sitting area in the courtyard. I also made light poles in different heights and shapes and they illuminate the ground in various ways. They also give the feeling of walking through a forest which leads up the mountain (Hotel) and up to the swimming pool.
